| Overview
Rehabilitation Aids Workshop by Women (RAWWD) was founded in 1997 as an offshoot of MOBILITY INDIA, one of the largest NGOs in India focused on providing aids for people with physical disabilities. RAWWD was established with the sole aim of assisting and encouraging women with disabilities to set up a workshop to produce quality rehabilitation devices which included prosthetic devices. Most of the women with disabilities do not have access to mobility aids for the simple reason that the technicians who measure them for aids and appliances are men. Besides, these women are totally dependent on their families. Thus, this gave rise for the need to encourage women to take up this profession.
Mobility India identified ten women with disabilities and provided them with appropriate appliances. These women were then trained to fabricate appliances. Today, these women who comprise the staff at RAWWD are confident and manage the workshop, take decisions, and meet clients, doctors and associated people in their profession. |
